Voted
best new course in Canada in 1996, Westwood Plateau Golf Club continues
to dazzle and impress golfers of all levels. High above the city of
Coquitlam in Vancouver, Westwood is a classic BC Mountain course.
Its large Douglas Firs, granite rock faces, rugged ravines and "edge-of-the-world"
green sites all combine to give the golfer what designer Michael Hurdzan
describes as a "wow experience" on every hole.
Perhaps the
best example of this philosophy is on the much talked-about 15th
hole. Playing from the furthest of the five tee boxes you have to
choose from, this hole drops an amazing 175 feet to the fairway
below. The sloping fairway and rapid drop mean that you should take
up to two clubs less than you normally would off the tee.
The urge will
of course be to grip-it-and-rip-it but the ravine in front of the
green has welcomed more than its fair share of golf balls from over-anxious
golfers. Your second shot will leave you between 150 and 200 yards
to the relatively small and well-defended green.
If you are
going to miss the green, miss it short. Trouble lurks on all other
sides. All these thoughts though must go through you mind while
you are distracted by spectacular views and the smell of Westwood
Plateau’s abundant wildflowers.
If
this golfing experience doesn’t give you goose bumps, nothing will.
Come play one of the best B.C. has to offer in the style you deserve.
